District Mot

Best Vietnamese (And there are plenty)

€ €AsianCasualVietnamese

District Mot is a casual Vietnamese restaurant fitted out to look like a Vietnamese street food vendor. It’s great place to get a bowl of Phở (noodle soup) for lunch, but has also gained a big following for its Bao Burger after it won Berlin’s best burger at the annual Burgers and Hip Hop event. Not traditionally a Vietnamese dish, but a cross between a burger and a banh mi. Their Pho is as close to what you can get in Vietnam, with piles of fresh herbs, chili and lime. You can grab a table for yourselves or choose to sit at the long communal table. The menu (in English) also has sharing plates of grilled and fried Vietnamese dishes, and includes quite few seafood and vegetarian options. And they throw in small funky dishes for more adventurous eaters (e.g. pan fried frogs legs with lemongrass). Drinks menu has everything from house cocktails, beer, Vietnamese coffee and some delicious fresh juices and smoothies.

Why eat Vietnamese in Berlin? Berlin has a tonne of Vietnamese restaurants owing to a strong migrant community. Vietnamese people began migrating to West Berlin during the US-Vietnam war, seeking refuge after the fall of Saigon in '78. And then in the 80's the East German government encouraged migration of Vietnamese people to boost the labor pool. Post-reunification Germany's Vietnamese community was roughly 100,000 strong.

Our favourites are the Phở bò tái (beef noodle soup), Gỏi cuốn (fresh summer spring rolls) and Bao Burger.
