Review: Yauatcha

Yauatcha

Yauatcha is probably the most commonly referenced restaurant in “best dim sum in London” lists. Like its sister restaurant Hakkasan, Yauatcha is a modern Chinese restaurant with a Michelin star and prices to match. Both places have a large underground dining area with pumping music and trendy decor. But unlike Hakkasan’s more varied menu, Yauatcha focuses primarily on dim sum. So it lives and dies by its siu mai and har gow.

Everything we ate was very good and beautifully presented; the har gow had a fresh prawn filling and a thin translucent wrapper, the siu mai was filled with tasty lean pork and shiitake mushrooms, and the filling and broth in the crab and pork xiao long bao were deliciously sweet with a subtle seafood flavour. The only minor complaint is that the dumplings were on the small side but then good things come in small packages.

The service was spot on - attentive and friendly without being overbearing. The tea was delivered almost immediately, and our cups were constantly refilled as it should be. And if you like tea, this is the place for you with over 20 kinds of leaves to choose from. Sure, you’ll be spending a lot more than in Chinatown down the road, but the quality of the ingredients and the much much much better service is worth the splurge once in awhile.

Food Score (out of 5) = 3.8
Service Score = 4.5
Environment Score = 4.0
Overall Score = 4.0

Time for food to arrive: 10 mins
Time for tea to arrive: 1 mins
Cost for 3 dishes + 1 tea: £23.30

Verdict: Worth the price, yum cha at its best.
