Review: Royal China Queensway

Royal China Queensway

When you think of dim sum in London, you think of Royal China. The long standing restaurant group now has 8 outlets. We didn’t visit all 8 but we included the original restaurant in Bayswater, as well as the highly regarded Royal China Club in Marylebone. Going into the original Royal China, my expectations were high. The place gets really busy with Chinese families in the weekend so we decided to arrive before 12.

Royal China’s dining room is large enough that even when full, you feel comfortable in the lively atmosphere. The service was super efficient - only 1 min wait for tea and 3 min for food, which may be in part be due to our early arrival but it’s impressive nonetheless. And the food really delivered. The har gow was filled with large prawns and had a nice thin wrapper, while the siu mai were compact but very flavourful. Other restaurants have tripped up on the xiao long bao, but not Royal China. Tasty filling, plenty of broth and a nice thin wrapper - it’s not Din Tai Fung but it’s one of the best we’ve tasted in London.

Food Score (out of 5) = 3.8
Service Score = 3.5
Environment Score = 4.0
Overall Score = 3.8

Time for food to arrive: 3 mins
Time for tea to arrive: 1 mins
Cost for 3 dishes + 1 tea: £13.50

Verdict: For an authentic dim sum experience and some of the best dumplings in London (and at a friendly price point).
