Review: Phoenix Palace

Phoenix Palace

Located just around the corner from Baker Street tube station, Phoenix Palace is popular with the local Chinese community. In fact, we’ve been to Phoenix Palace on several occasions with Chinese relatives and family friends. The restaurant has an old school feel with classic wooden chairs, large silk tapestry on walls, and Chinese symbols on the carpet. And the food? The har gow was one of the best we’ve had in London - good size dumpling, thin translucent wrapper, and delicious prawn filling. The xiao long bao was not as successful - the dumpling was way too big and not enough meaty flavour. Service can be patchy; on this occasion we arrived before 12 and were served promptly, but when it gets busy dishes can be slow to arrive.

Food Score (out of 5) = 3.5
Service Score = 3.0
Environment Score = 4.0
Overall Score = 3.5

Time for food to arrive: 8 mins
Time for tea to arrive: 1 mins
Cost for 3 dishes + 1 tea: £13.60

Verdict: Old school yum cha, stick to Cantonese classics.
