Review: Pearl Liang

Pearl Liang

Pearl Liang is not in the main Bayswater area, instead it’s situated just behind Paddington station and is popular on weekdays with office workers nearby. In the weekend, it can get super busy and filled with Chinese families, which is always a good sign. Pearl Liang is actually our go-to dim sum place as it’s within walking distance from home, so it was an interesting exercise to include it in this search and try to see it with fresh eyes.

The modern interiors decorated with pink blossoms make you feel at ease as soon as you enter. The service was prompt and efficient - we were asked whether we wanted tea as soon as we sat down - and unlike other Chinese restaurants, friendly and personal. On the other hand, the food was uneven. The siu mai was excellent, well-seasoned and a good balance of pork and prawn, while the har gow filling was tasty but the wrapper was too thick. The xiao long bao were simply disappointing - too large with thick wrappers to the point where some of the dough was still raw. It’s a shame because we loved the service and environment.

Food Score (out of 5) = 2.8
Service Score = 3.5
Environment Score = 4.0
Overall Score = 3.2

Time for food to arrive: 13 mins
Time for tea to arrive: 2 mins
Cost for 3 dishes + 1 tea: £11.60

Verdict: A pleasant place for dim sum if you’re near Paddington but avoid the XLB.
